Unless a laboratory error has been made, the serum albumin concentration is always the larger value. The gradient is calculated by subtraction and is not a ratio. If the SAAG is 1.1 g/dL (11 g/L) or greater, the patient can be considered to have portal hypertension with an accuracy of approximately 97%.
