Tests for cardiolipin antibodies are frequently used to help determine the cause of:An unexplained blood clot (thrombotic episode) or Recurrent miscarriages. If a person with a known autoimmune disorder tests negative for cardiolipin antibodies, they may be retested later as these antibodies may develop at any time in the future. The Cardiolipin IgM assay uses chemiluminescent immunoassay (CLIA) technology for the in vitro semiquantitative determination of autoantibodies of IgM class directed against cardiolipin in human serum. Cardiolipin Antibodies belong to the group of AntiPhospholipid antibody along with lupus anticoagulant (LAC), Anticardiolipin (ACL) antibodies, and anti-β2 -glycoprotein I antibodies. The antibodies are found in a variety of diseases including SLE (24-5% cases) and related diseases these are typically found in secondary anti phospholipid syndrome. In patients with no other autoimmune disease these antibodies are found in primary anti phospholipid syndrome, associated with thrombosis and recurrent abortion. The assay is an aid in diagnosis of risk estimation of cardiolipin in SLE and related diseases. The antibodies may also be seen transiently in other disorders and hence should be confirmed by Repeat sample. Confirmatory procedures should be performed to rule out the presence of syphilis infection.
